Healing Is Not Linear: Making Peace With the Spiral
Many of us imagine healing as a straight line: we feel bad, we do the work, and we steadily feel better. Then an old feeling resurfaces, and we wonder whether anything has changed at all.
The spiral, not the line
Healing often moves more like a spiral, or like the phases of the moon. We return to familiar places, but each time we arrive with more awareness, more tools and more compassion than before. Revisiting a wound doesn't erase your progress. It's often a sign you're ready to meet it at a deeper level.
Notice the small shifts
Progress can be quiet. Maybe you recover from a hard moment a little faster, speak to yourself a little more gently, or recognize a pattern while it's happening instead of afterward. These are real changes.
Let setbacks be information
When an old reaction returns, try getting curious instead of critical. What was happening just before? What did you need in that moment? Setbacks can show us exactly where care is still needed.
You are becoming
There is no deadline for healing. Every phase, even the dark ones, is part of the cycle. Like the crescent moon, you are always on your way back to the light.
